Integrity — Can Make You Rich

Wouldn’t it be a great world if everyone had this sense of integrity?

We could once again live in a world where we didn’t have to lock our cars and put alarms on our houses and never need to shred our paperwork again. Waiting for that to happen would get us accused of shameless wishful thinking. Instead, every one of us should adopt a high level of personal integrity because, according to experts in this field, it’s the best way to get rich and stay rich. The late great mentor, Earl Nightingale once wrote, “If honesty did not exist, it would have to be invented, as it is the surest way of getting rich.”

I agree with this because almost every successful person I ever knew or read about had a very high level of personal integrity. Sure, we all have met people who have made a lot of money using standards that were less than perfect, some even unethical, but ultimately they always fell from grace.

I am sure you point out many people who were talented, hardworking, and dedicated to their profession, but they weren’t quite forthright. They weren’t crooks, but if they saw an opportunity to cut corners they would do it.

How many times have you heard stories like this? You watched your friend’s progress. He worked hard and had many successes, but they didn’t last. He had a very rich business partner and they are doing well until the partner was caught in a scam and had to leave the country. This caused your friend’s business to collapse. His baby son died. His wife left him. His next business failed. The reason for all these failures was clear. He was not a crook. He didn’t belong in jail, but he was not quite open and honest.

Here is a complete guide to being Rich and Successful

I remember my former company’s accountant telling me about a young sales executive. The youngster was a real go-getter and top producer, but an incident happened that caused the accountant to keep a close watch on his activities.

After several months of high expense reports, the accountant decided to verify the mileage being claimed by this young man. He checked the odometer of his car against what had been put in by this executive and he found a wide discrepancy in mileage. When the accountant confronted the young executive, he told the accountant that he had someone he knew from the speedometer shop to roll the odometer back so he wouldn’t have to pay for going over his allotted miles.

The accountant rejected his claim for the mileage and had a lengthy discussion with the young man about honesty and integrity. He explained that rolling back the miles on the odometer was no different than stealing from the company. The young man was very apologetic and remorseful and vowed never to do anything like that again, but it left lingering doubts in the accountant’s mind.

True enough, within a month after this encounter, the accountant discovered that the young executive had used a client’s name in an advertising contract in an attempt to win a sales contest. Needless to say, the young man did not remain long in the company, nor did he fare any better in future endeavors during the following years.

So when people tell you “everybody does it,” alarm bells should go off in your head. You’re down at the Cineplex and your friends want to sneak into another movie, “But everybody does it,” they tell you. Maybe so, but you’re not everybody. In the simplest of terms, what goes around, comes around.

According to some Eastern beliefs, if your behavior is less than exemplary, it negatively affects your dharma (who you are), and that in turn ruins your karma (how the universe treats you).

Maintaining integrity is not easy at times. Temptations can arise that make sacrificing integrity financially attractive. The best advice you can take to help you develop your own high standards of integrity is to study the lives of people you admire. By doing so, you will learn that their most endearing characteristic is their integrity and reliability. They could be counted upon in difficult times. Their offices are usually filled with books about great people. Read the lives and people like Lincoln, Florence Nightingale, and Margaret Thatcher. Study the people whose strength of character helped them change the world.

Napoleon Hill, a well-known writer who wrote the classic “Think and Grow Rich” created an imaginary board of personal advisers made up of great figures like Lincoln, Jesus, and Alexander The Great. Whenever he had to make a difficult decision, he would relax deeply and then imagine that the members of his advisory council were sitting at a large table in front of him. He would visualize himself asking them what he should do to deal effectively with a particular situation. In times, he would sense the answer, observations, and insights that these great advisors might give, and it would help him see more clearly and act more effectively.

You can do the same thing. Select people whom you admire for their qualities such as courage, tenacity, honesty, or wisdom. Ask yourself, “What would Winston Churchill do if he were here at this time?” By doing this, you’ll find that you receive guidance that enables you to resist temptations and able to maintain a high degree of personal integrity.
